Kizashi ESCAPE THE CITY. TAKE TO THE OPEN ROAD BECAUSE IT’S THERE, BECAUSE YOU CAN. AT HOME IN THE CITY, IN ITS ELEMENT BEING BATTERED BY THE ELEMENTS. Suzuki has asked me to take the new Kizashi for a road trip and then write about it. Starting and ending in Manchester, I’ll be touring the Lake District for a few days seeking out some of Britain’s most challenging roads. 6OLSSLQJLQWRWKHGULYHUʧVVHDWIRUWKH˸UVWWLPHZKDW strikes me is the feel and wonderful smell of leather. ,WJLYHVWKHFDUDQH[FOXVLYHIHHOULJKWR˷$JRRGVWDUW I like it already. I spend the next few miles familiarising myself with the cockpit. Everything seems to be at P\˸QJHUWLSVDQGWKHGLVSOD\VDUHEULJKWDQGFOHDU Before I know it open space surrounds me, and the city suburbs are a memory in the rear view mirror. I’m starting to enjoy myself. The 2.4 litre engine quietly purrs as we snake through the increasingly stunning ODQGVFDSH$FURVVZLQGODVKHVWKHERG\ZRUNDVZH (me and my Kizashi) accelerate out of a tight right-hander, the 4-wheel drive keeping us stuck ˸UPO\WRWHUUD˸UPD7KH.L]DVKLʧVDWKOHWLFJRRGORRNV and contemporary styling are certainly at home in the city, but out here it feels like freedom. The road R˷HUVQRWKLQJEXWSRVVLELOLW\DQG,IROORZLWMXVW because I can. GREAT DESIGN IS THE PERFECT BALANCE OF FORM AND FUNCTION. Great design is the heart and soul of the new Kizashi. It’s without doubt a car that will turn heads, equipped with its sweeping lines and contemporary sophistication. Some people actually give me a double take, and believe me, that doesn’t happen often. :LWKGHVLJQLQPLQGLWʧVDSSURSULDWHWKDWRXU˸UVW stop en route is an overnight stay at Dome House, Windermere. Dome House is not your ordinary run of the mill building. Its modern design shows amazing attention to detail, not unlike the Kizashi. I park up outside the building and jump out. The Kizashi really looks the part in front of the beautifully designed structure. I grab my bag from the ample boot and walk along WKHSDVVHQJHUVLGHWDNLQJLQWKHFDUVHOHJDQWSUR˸OH Boot spoiler, 18-inch alloys and sport side-sill covers. ,SDXVHEULH˹\LQIURQWRIWKHVSRUW\IURQWHQGDQGZLSH away an unfortunate insect from the headlamp just above the headlamp washer. I’m not normally such a perfectionist. IT’S HUMAN NATURE TO TAKE THE EASY ROUTE. IT’S THE HUMAN SPIRIT AND A GREAT CAR THAT BEG TO DIFFER. $IWHUDUHVWIXOQLJKWLQWKH2UDQJH5RRPDQGDKHDUW\ Dome House breakfast on the balcony, it’s time for a challenge. The Hardknott Pass is the steepest road in England reaching a peak of 393m (1,289ft) with a 33% gradient at its steepest point. Why do this? Because it’s fun and because I can. The last time I travelled this route was at less than walking pace on a bicycle with several hundred other lunatics. The 2.4 litre engine and 4-wheel drive make the whole experience much less painful. The Kizashi handles the numerous hairpin bends, avoids on-coming WUD˺FDQGFDUHIUHHVKHHSZLWKSDQDFKHVWLFNLQJWRWKH road like it were on rails. The climb and descent really give me a chance to see what the Kizashi can do, and it doesn’t disappoint. A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE. $IWHUWKH+DUGNQRWWSDVVRUGLQDU\URDGVVHHPDOLWWOH mundane, so I set the cruise control. ,VWDUWSUHVVLQJEXWWRQVWRVHHZKDWWKH\GR$OOWKH controls are conveniently close at hand with the leather multi-function steering wheel. I sing along out of key because I can and because no one can hear me. My second overnight stop at the :RROSDFN,QQLVRQO\DIHZPLOHVR˷7LPHWROXEULFDWH the vocal chords. WHEN YOU’RE CLOCKING UP THE MILES, LUXURY GOES A LONG WAY. I ease back in my seat feeling the comfort of the leather upholstery as it surrounds me. With 10-way power adjustable seating and 3 position memory VHWWLQJVLWʧVDEUHH]HWR˸QGP\SHUIHFWGULYLQJSRVLWLRQ I love this feature. If my wife drives my car it takes me IURP/DQGʧV(QGWR-RKQ2ʧ*URDWVWRSHUIHFWP\VHDW position again. It’s roomy in here too. There’s plenty of HOERZDQGOHJURRPIRU˸YHDGXOWV7KHGLVSOD\SDQHOV are thoughtfully positioned and well illuminated while the rain sensing wipers keep my vision clear. The power steering guides me around every curve delivering me safely to my destination. FLY LIKE THE WIND, STICK LIKE GLUE. The Kizashi is a good looking car for sure. But the longer I spend behind the wheel, the more I realise it’s what you don’t see that makes this car such a EODVWWRGULYH8QGHULWVERQQHWWKHOLWUHHQJLQH delivers all the power I need. It’s capable of 127 mph, but of course I stick strictly to the speed limit. With its selectable 4-wheel drive the Kizashi seems to relish every twist, turn, peak and trough the Lake District can throw at it. Some of the road conditions we’ve encountered are not for the faint hearted but nothing is a problem for the Kizashi with its can do attitude. Wet and slippy, mud, lose gravel, potholes and no doubt snow, the Kizashi takes them all in its stride. What the car delivers is a thrilling drive, not a white knuckle ride.
